I get an error message 'Automation Error' when
starting RadSamp
This is usually caused by one of two problems:
- Not all the multimedia components are installed in Windows
- The sound hardware is not installed or functioning correctly
In the first case, un-install RadSamp and using Control Panel ->
Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup select all multimedia components and
install. This will probably prompt for the Windows 98 CD or installation
files directory. When installed, reboot and re-install RadSamp.
The error can also occur when the sound hardware is not installed or
functioning correctly. This has been observed on some Laptop systems when the
hardware configuration has changed (e.g. a PCMCIA card has been installed or
removed) and not all the hardware is subsequently installed when rebooted.
As a basic check - note whether the Windows startup sound plays (if enabled) and
if the Windows volume control icon (the speaker near the clock) is
displayed. If the sound hardware is not detected, the icon is not
displayed.
FAQ
There is a very slight delay when playing samples
and/or an extra click at the start of samples
This has been observed in the following situations:
- USB audio hardware
- Windows 2000 with a conventional sound card
Both of the above appear to be caused by the internal operation of the
Windows DirectX processing. RadSamp usually plays instantly, but with some
audio hardware combinations Windows stops the audio output processing when no
sounds are playing. This causes a very slight delay when starting playing
any sound sample. In addition, some data may remain in the sound buffer
from the previous sample which is then heard when the next sample is played -
this sounds like a brief click at the start of a sample.
In order to address this, RadSamp (Full version) has an option to loop a
silent sample continuously, while running RadSamp. This is currently being
tested on various platforms to ensure the problem described does not occur.
